Vonage Offers Unlimited Int’l Calling for iPhone, Blackberry

Posted in iPhone News by admin. Published December 26th, 2009

Vonage now offers an unlimited $24.99-a-month international calling plan for iPhone and BlackBerry users, the company said Wednesday. The new “Vonage World Mobile” VoIP service competes with a $12.95-a-month service from Skype.

Vonage, however, offers service 60 countries, while Skype offers unlimited service to only 40 countries. Current Vonage customers may qualify for a $10-a-month discount on the mobile service.

Vonage World Mobile is intended to give customers a lower-cost option for calling landline and mobile phones internationally. It is provided using a free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, available at the usual place. BlackBerry users will find their version at BlackBerry App World.

Vonage World Mobile software is available to iPhone users over cellular and Wi-Fi data connections, while Blackberry uses only cellular. The company first released an international calling app for iPhone and BlackBerry in October; today’s announcement adds a subscription option.

The use of cellular data is possible because AT&T, the exclusive iPhone carrier in the U.S., in October changed its rule prohibiting VoIP over its cellular data network. This has been seen as reflecting the carrier’s acceptance that VoIP calling will in many cases supplant its traditional voice network.

iPhone … in an iPhone

Posted in iPhone News by admin. Published December 26th, 2009

Here’s a nice post-Christmas mind bender for you — it’s created by a company named Ogmento (they specialize in augmented reality applications — get it?) and is an iPhone app that creates an augmented reality version of the iPhone. In other words, they put an iPhone in your iPhone so you can iPhone while you iPhone. Dawg.

Why did they do this? Apparently it’s a promotion for the iPhone launch by Orange Telecom in Israel. But it’s pretty crazy — the iPhone inside the app even runs apps, though they’re just still pictures. And it’s a little disappointing that you interact with the fake iPhone via the real iPhone’s touchscreen. If it really was an augmented reality demonstration, wouldn’t you interact with the augmented reality iPhone just by moving your hand in the air where it should be?

Maybe that’s too mind-melting after a relaxing Christmas day. At any rate, enjoy the crazy video above. This isn’t anything we’ll see coming to the App Store any time soon, we’re sure, but it’s just the kind of thing to get your mind up and running again after all that egg nog and holiday cheer.
