Tesco announces Iphone pricing

UK SUPERMARKET Tesco has announced its UK pricing and tariffs for the Iphone which it is due to start selling later this month.

Apple’s smartphone will be on Tesco’s shelves and in its web store by the 14th December, the firm said today, adding that with deals starting at £20 a month it is offering the lowest contract price available in the UK.

It didn’t, however, put out any such statements about its £60 a month contract, which even our rudimentary calculator worked out to be a massive £15 a week for two years.

Although you get the Iphone itself for free on this rental agreement, apart from the 3GS which costs £50, and calls, WiFi, and all that other guff is included, we suspect that at this rate it will soon be economically more viable to outsource having a phone to someone in India.

Tesco is offering a twelve month tariff though, which for the UK is an Iphone first. However, if you take it on this contract with an 8GB 3G model you will have to stump up £222, while it will set you back £320 for the 16GB and £407 for the 32GB 3GS. Rental is only £20 a month with this option and web and WiFi access are included along with £60 worth of calls.

Meanwhile, some lucky schoolchildren have been given Iphones for free, no £2 a day contracts for them, to see whether the gadgets will help with their learning.

Tha kids, from the charmingly-named Gumley House Convent School in Hounslow, will use the Iphones in class over the next seven months, not as it one might suspect to drive a new teacher to madness, but to see how mobile devices can be used to ‘facilitate learning’.

“In most schools mobile phones are viewed as distractions and banned from the classroom. But, as technology becomes more integrated into our daily lives, we wanted to understand how it could be used positively in the learning environment. The girls on the trial are encouraged to use the Iphones as much as possible,” said Simon Elledge, Manager at the Brentford City Learning Centre.

Presumably over the din of Beyonce ringtones.
