$1,000 BarMax iPhone app aimed at lawyers

An iPhone application which helps law students prepare for their bar exam is being sold through the iTunes App Store for $999.99

The BarMax CA app — one of the most expensive in the App Store’s history — combines hundreds of hours of audio lectures with multiple choice questions, essays and performance tests designed to hone the skills and knowledge of law students about to sit the tough bar exam.

It has been developed by Mike Ghaffary, a law graduate and direct of business development at online payment site TrialPay.

He came up with the idea of an iPhone app for bar students while studying for his own exam, and contacted a team of iPhone developers and fellow Harvard law graduates to create the application.

Ghaffary believes his company can charge substantially less than the $3,000 to $4,000 usually demanded by bar exam coaching companies because the iPhone application doesn’t require any classroom-based learning.

The application — which will take up 1GB of space on an iPhone or iPod touch — is specifically designed for the California bar exam, although Ghaffary says he hopes to release other versions of the software for the different state bar exams in the coming months. British iPhone owners can buy the app for £599.99.

BarMax is one of the most expensive app in App Store history. In August 2008, an application called I Am Rich raised eyebrows with its £999.99 price tag. The app, which simply showed a picture of a red ruby glowing on the iPhone’s screen, was quickly removed from the App Store by Apple.
