During the TED Conference this week in Long Beach, Calif., BNET’s Brent Schlender asked Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates what he thought of Apple’s new iPad tablet.

“You know, I’m a big believer in touch and digital reading, but I still think that some mixture of voice, the pen and a real keyboard – in other words a netbook – will be the mainstream on that,” Gates told BNET. “So, it’s not like I sit there and feel the same way I did with iPhone where I say, ‘Oh my God, Microsoft didn’t aim high enough.’ It is a nice reader, but there’s nothing on the iPad I look at and say, ‘Oh, I wish Microsoft had done it.’”
Surprise – Gates has joined the iPad skeptics. But hold up! What did he just say about the Apple iPhone?
“Oh my God, Microsoft didn’t aim high enough.”
Ah. There’s a juicy quote.
We know Bill and Melinda Gates forbid – or at least forbade – the iPod and iPhone in their household. We know Melinda Gates sometimes has – or at least had – a little iPhone envy. And we know Bill Gates was impressed by but was skeptical of the iPhone.
But Bill, that’s a helluva concession you just made.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is poised to announce the next version of its smartphone operating system Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Tune into The Microsoft Blog then for all the news – the event starts at 6 a.m. Pacific time.
