Could Samsung’s Wave Outsell Smart Phone Rivals?

Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s second largest mobile phone maker after Finland’s Nokia Corp., on Sunday launched the Samsung Wave –- the first touchscreen smart phone running on its own bada operating system — at a glitzy event at the annual Mobile World Congress industry showcase in Barcelona.

Today, Ireland-based bookmaker Paddy Power was offering odds of 4/1 that Samsung’s new touchscreen device will outsell both the Google Nexus One and Apple iPhone globally this year.

However, the iPhone remains the bookies odds-on 4/6 favorite to wave goodbye to the competition and easily become the best selling mobile device in the world this year.

Google sold about 80,000 Nexus One mobile phones in its first month on the market, roughly one-eighth the 600,000 units the original Apple iPhone sold in its debut month, according to analytics group Flurry Inc.

Paddy Power is also taking bets on who will have the greatest share of the global mobile phone device market (without Nokia) on the first of January next year. Sony-Ericsson has emerged as the bookies strong 2/5 favorite with Samsung available at odds of 7/4.

Paddy Power said the Samsung Wave has “a sporting chance of outselling the Nexus One, but my money is on the iPhone to easily outsell both devices this year.”
