Smartphone sales hit a record in the fourth quarter of 2009, with iPhones showing the biggest growth according to a report Thursday.
Research firm IDC said shipments of smartphones rose 39 percent year-to-year to 54.4 million devices.

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) shipments of iPhones soared by nearly 98 percent to 8.7 million shipments, but still trailed No. 1 Nokia and No. 2 Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM).
Nokia’s shipments were up nearly 38 percent to 20.8 million units. Blackberry-maker Research in Motion’s shipments rose nearly 41 percent to 10.7 million units.
