Steve Jobs promises universal inbox for mail app on the iPhone

Steve Jobs sure is putting his iPad through its paces. Over the past 2 weeks, Jobs has been responding to customer emails with unusual frequency, and while some of the aren’t terribly pressing, Jobs recently dropped some clues about what we can expect in the next iPhone OS.

Over the past 2 weeks, Jobs has been responding to customer emails with unusual frequency, and while most of the questions raised aren’t terribly pressing, Jobs recently dropped some clues about what we can expect to see in the next iPhone OS which will most likely drop later this June.

Responding to a user email about whether or not the Mail app on the iPhone would ever receive a universal inbox (as it is on Mail on the Mac) Jobs simply responded, “Yep.”

That’s as classic a Jobsian email response as you’ll ever see.

With the way the Mail app is currently set up on the iPhone, users have to manually switch between different tabs in order to keep track of email from different providers. A universal inbox would therefore a godsend for anyone tasked with keeping an eye on a few email inboxes.

While the iPad is attracting a lot of attention in the days leading up to its release, which is now less than a week away, tidbits about the upcoming iPhone OS have been few and far in between. One of the more intriguing rumors, though, is that next iPhone OS will at long last offer support for third-party multitasking. I’m sure that once the initial iPad hype dies down, rumors about the next-gen iPhone will start making the rounds.
