iPhone version 4.0 is official! It’s got all the goodies, multi-tasking, background GPS, background audio streaming (Pandora), background VOIP calls and even iBooks (thanks iPad). Apple has announced the upgrade but won’t make it available to all the iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch 3rd Gen users out there until sometime this summer. iPad will get the update in the Fall. Original iPhone and iPhone 3G users along with iPod Touch 1st/2nd Gen will get some features but not the multitasking (booooo). That’s too bad for owners of older hardware but Apple has to cut them loose at some point to move forward.
From my perspective, it looks like Apple bought a Palm Pre and a Google Android phone and said, “What’s really good about these phones that we could do on the iPhone?” That’s not a diss, good for them! They’ve just upped the ante on everyone. You could argue that their multi-tasking isn’t true multi-tasking. It allows background GPS and Audio but otherwise it’s just allowing the OS to put a bookmark into an app before it shuts it down and creating an easy interface to get back to that app. Smart! It doesn’t drain battery and it serves the purpose of 99.99 percent of end users. They’ve taken almost every advantage other phones have over the iPhone and “double downed.”
Apple may be the market leader in touchscreen smartphones but they’re clearly not going to let that make them fat and lazy. They’re aggressively introducing new features that users want without sacrificing the things people love about the iPhone (battery life, speedy OS). I don’t even own an iPhone but I’ll be looking forward to playing with the new added 4.0 features this summer.
Any iPhone users out there? What’s your favorite new feature added in 4.0? What did they forget?
