Despite iPad’s halo, iPhone and Android top developer list

On the heels of the iPad hitting the streets today, an interesting little survey made its way out of Mountain View. Appcelerator, an open source platform for mobile apps, released its latest Mobile Developer Survey which shows slightly dwindling interest in the iPad as a development platform.

The previous survey of some 1000+ developers (who, Appcelerator says, have broad backgrounds representing the range of iPhone, Android, PCs, Macs and Linux) was done in January following the official Apple announcement of the iPad. 90% of devs surveyed then were “very interested” in creating an iPad app within a year, a frenzied furor unquestionably. Flash forward to March 23-25, and only 80% of respondents gave the same response.

The lowered interest in the iPad from developers might be linked to the additional information about its specs prior to official launch. Or, perhaps the hype has *somewhat* settled for natural causes. And let’s keep in mind that the latest ‘It’ thing has only hit the store shelves today. But other numbers from the survey might be just as telling.

Only 53% surveyed indicated they were more broadly interested in the iPad as a development platform in general. “Only”, of course, is a relative word. In this instance, “only 53%” represents a distant third place behind the two big boys for the general category.

Apple’s own iPhone is, not surprisingly, still top seed showing 87% “very interested” in it as a dev platform. It isn’t difficult to guess who’s closing in on that substantial crown and in the number two spot currently.

Google’s Android mobile OS has 81% of the developers vote in the latest survey, up from 68% in January. What’s more, Blackberry and Windows Phone each jumped in the dev poll, suggesting that despite the release of the Goliath iPad, the trend seems to be on greater choice and exploration across a broad spectrum of platforms.

A few other survey questions saw interesting feedback, with the following noted by Appcelerator in its findings: “Developers with over 1,000 employees cited having an iPhone, Android and/or Blackberry app as ‘critical’, while only 36% said they were very interested in the iPad.”

Despite the slightly falling numbers, its clear that iPad’s hype will be here to stay as many are calling it nothing short of revolutionary and it’s only on Day One. But the landscape is markedly evolving and, at this point, it seems choice for consumers and developers alike may be the clear winner.
