iPhone 4 Specs Confidential Until July 19, Can They Do That?

While most smartphones have their specifications disclosed before even the first pre-order is taken, the iPhone 4 has managed to secure 600,000 pre-orders without disclosing all its specs for consumers to use in unbiased comparison with other handsets.

This became inherently obvious when MacRumors leaked the fact that the iPhone 4 has 512MB or RAM, something so basic that one would have expected Apple to have disclosed it during the launch and not days after securing all the pre-orders.

Apple requests FCC hide iPhone 4 specs

Today, a letter from Apple to the FCC shed some light on how the iPhone 4 may have been such a tight lid secret. The letter requests the FCC to keep the details of the iPhone 4 hidden from the public for 45 days more. Now we’re not sure why Apple is so worried since it’s silly to think its major competitors like the HTC Evo 4G, HTC Incredible and upcoming Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X could actually do anything with the revealed information. These flagship Androids have been finalized already so there isn’t really anything they can do to match the iPhone 4 at this stage.

“Unless of course, there was a certain piece of hardware suggesting the iPhone 4 is CDMA compatible and hints the possibility that a Verizon iPhone 4 is coming.” - Oxford Zeiss
