This Week’s Hits: iPhone, iPhone, iPhone… and North Korea

1. They’re back — the Apple line guys. The arrival of the iPhone 4 in Japan came only a month after the frenzy that was the iPad launch. But this time there was a difference: the gadget’s same-day launch in five countries meant Japanese buyers would be first on the planet to get their paws on the latest version of the hit smartphone. And that meant an early start for the Appple line club.

2. There’s no question that Apple’s products are wildly popular in Japan. But in a country reknowned for its tech whizzes, some did get to thinking — how come a Japanese company couldn’t make something like the iPhone?

3. Did we mention it’s World Cup time? These Japanese North Korea supporters didn’t need telling, gathering in force to support their team in its first campaign at the summit of soccer for 44 years. Sadly for them, things didn’t go too well against a strong and skilful Portuguese side. In fact, they took a 7-0 pasting. But real fans support their team, come what may…

4. … and real iPhone fans stay in line, mostly. Occasionally real life — and social media habits — do intervene though, costing one hardcore gadget geek his second place in the line. There was a silver lining, though, as the band of Tweeters and internet broadcasters in these lines morphs into an ever-closer circle.

5. And Apple kept things classy in Ginza with fabulous free gifts. Who said waiting in line for days was uncomfortable and hard work?
