It’s really a simple question: if you already own an Apple iPhone, can you get an upgrade to the new one when it’s launched on June 24?
But as was the case when Apple released its 3G phone a couple of years back, the answer isn’t quite as simple.
AT&T says it will charge new subscribers $199 or $299 for the iPhone 4 — depending on how much built-in memory the device has. For those who already current subscribers AT&T applies a secret formula to determine what kind of deal you might get on an upgrade — in other words, if you qualify for the “new” subscriber rate.
Should you fall short of the company’s requirements, you’ll end up paying $399 for the cheaper phone or $499 for the one with more storage. AT&T is promising to be more generous than last time about applying the formula.
Basically if you are “upgrade eligible” at any time this year, you will be allowed to buy the iPhone 4 on the launch day for the lower price. Why the fuss over whether you can get a new unit? Like other phone companies, AT&T subsidizes the cost of smart phones — and wants to make some of that money back through service fees before letting subscribers get new phones.
