iPhone 4 Carrier Unlocked, Public Release Imminent

It’s been less than a month since the contentious iPhone 4 release, but the enterprising ensemble behind DevTeam has already managed to crack Apple security and unlock the phone for use on more networks than you can slot a SIM card at.

Thanks to a series of video reports from team member Planetbeing we know the group managed to successfully update their ultrasn0w freeware to run on iOS 4, though it seems to have taken longer than usual due to new baseband software unique to the iPhone 4 (the iPhone 3, 3G and 3GS all relied on the same baseband.)

Planetbeing suggests the latest build is a quick and dirty fix that may not be up to DevTeam standards, and likely won’t be released until after Apple updates their software to address the antenna interference issues. Even after the next build of ultrasn0w is released, a “soft” carrier unlock is only the first step in fully jailbreaking the iPhone 4. While we would never encourage GeekTech readers to void their warranty on such a finicky phone (especially after camping out all night to purchase one,) this is exciting news for anyone interested in software optimization, free and open global telecommunications or just untethering themselves from the AT&T teat.
