The lawsuit that started back in 2007, reached class-action status just recently. The lawsuit claims that both Apple and AT&T illegally exerting a monopoly over iPhone customers.
Basically, because the iPhone exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T is for 5 years, the customer that buys an iPhone and signs a two year contract with AT&T is in fact stuck with AT&T for 5 years, if they want to keep using the iPhone platform.
Even though a customer may cancel their contract with an early termination fee at any time, they will have to give up their iPhone because Apple or AT&T do not unlock the iPhone for use on other carriers such as T-Mobile.
How this could effect you? Well if your an iPhone user, the court has allowed for multiple plaintiffs to represent 20 million iPhone users who have been forced to use AT&T as the sole provider for network services.
If this lawsuit is successful, you could get out of your iPhone contract at no fee, if you want to of course.
The lawsuit may also reveal more information regarding as to when the exclusivity agreement ends, and as a result if we can expect to see the iPhone on Verizon anytime soon, which is doubtful.
