IPhone -”Jailbreaking” Your iPhone Won’t Land You in Jail Anymore

The FCC announced Monday that the once-illegal - albeit controversial - practice of “jailbreaking” cell phones is now legal. According to Yahoo News, even though Apple seriously frowns upon it, there are about a million iPhone users that have successfully jailbroken their iPhones.

Even though this process was, “technically illegal,” no one was prosecuted whatsoever for jailbreaking a mobile phone.

Jailbreaking is known as the practice of “breaking into” your phone so that it can be used either by another network (like iPhones that run on T-Mobile) or allow it to use other applications than the ones that are approved by Apple or another mobile provider.

While there are already inlaid consequences with this method – like voiding your phone’s warranty; it no longer includes jail time.

Tech writer Christopher Null agrees that most jailbroken phones are found on the T-Mobile network or other overseas carriers and that some of the applications that can be used on a jailbroken phone include “Safari ad-blocking apps, alternate keyboard layouts, or programs that chance the interface to the iPhone’s SMS system and the way the icons are laid out.”

After yesterday’s announcement, Apple fought a hard battle against the FCC’s legalization of the process since they claimed jailbreaking was a form of copyright violation; said Null. Unfortunately for Apple, the FCC disagreed with them and stated that jailbreaking only enhances the capabilities of the phone and is “legitimate under fair-use rules.”

It is important to remember that just because the practice of jailbreaking is now legal, it is not a “get out of jail free card,” said CRN.com writer Anthony Hickey.

According to Hickey, even though there is no punishment, mobile companies are still making it difficult for jailbreakers to benefit from this process. Hickey said that because of this and other reasons, it is not a very worthwhile process.
