Mysterious top-ranked iPhone apps disappear from iTunes

China hits back at EU over modem dumping charges; mysterious top-ranked iPhone apps disappear from iTunes; and Lenovo is ‘lucky’ that Apple not focused on China.

China has hit back at the European Commission over an investigation into allegations of hardware dumping. The Commission launched the probe after Belgium modem-maker Option formally complained that Chinese companies were dumping WWAN (wireless wide-area network) modems onto the European Union market at absurdly cheap prices. However, Beijing has now accused the E.U. of protectionism.

A group of iPhone apps that had received top rankings on the iTunes Store have disappeared from the top 50 book applications following complaints from developers. The developers said they noticed dozens of applications by the same author surge into the top rankings, although the applications frequently had few or no user reviews and appeared to be roughly coded. The incident coincided with reports that iTunes Store users were charged for applications they say they did not purchase, suggesting that their accounts may have been compromised.

Lenovo is “lucky” that Apple CEO Steve Jobs isn’t focused on the Chinese market, according to reported comments by Lenovo’s chairman. “We are lucky that Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn’t care about China. If Apple were to spend the same effort on the Chinese consumer as we do, we would be in trouble,” Liu Chuanzhi told the Financial Times in a report published Sunday. Liu’s comments are noteworthy because Lenovo’s established dominance of the Chinese PC market hasn’t faced a serious threat in years.

Taiwan’s biggest telecommunications company, Chunghwa Telecom, signed an agreement Monday with the world’s largest contract laptop maker to jointly develop cloud computing software, services and hardware products aimed at markets in Asia. Chunghwa and Quanta Computer will focus on Taiwan first, offering Web storage and services hosting as well as projects tailored to customer needs, they said in a joint statement. They will also create new products and services. The companies hope to lead government offices, businesses and more into cloud computing through the initiative.
