Apple has applied for patents on technology to identify unauthorized or illegitimate use of iPhones, and for a kill switch that will make phones inoperable subsequent to “jailbreaking” or unlocking the iPhone.
This follows the recent court ruling that an iPhone owner who unlocks his or her phone has not violated Apple’s copyright.
The patent language reportedly addresses removing the SIM card from the device, unlocking the device, and potentially moving the iPhone a pre-determined distance from another device to which it is synchronized. In addition to making the iPhone inoperable, sensitive data could be erased from the iPhone (a capability in use for years on the Blackberries network — see article).
So apparently the technology is capable of protecting legitimate users’ confidential information, as well as controlling Apple’s product.
In the Cleveland area, iPhones are available from AT&T stores and from Apple stores including the Apple store at Crocker Park in Westlake.
