Mark Papermaster, the executive responsible for Apple Inc.’s iPhone’s hardware, has left the company after criticism about the new version’s antenna design, the New York Times reported.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling confirmed Papermaster’s departure and said Bob Mansfield, senior vice president of Macintosh hardware engineering, was taking over Papermaster’s duties, the newspaper said. It wasn’t clear whether Papermaster was fired or left on his own, the Times said. Papermaster declined to comment to the newspaper.
Last month, Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said Apple was working to improve reception on its iPhone 4 handsets and would offer free rubber cases to customers after complaints were received about diminished reception.
