China Unicom, Apple Inc’s one and only carrier in China, on Monday introduced Apple Inc’s Wi-Fi model iPhone to the world’s largest mobile market .
Unicom, which managed to sell the iPhone without Wi-Fi function in China last year, now offers customers an iPhone 3GS ( 8GB) with wireless Internet capability.

The price tag of the WiFi-enabled iPhone is 4,999 yuan (738 dollars), which is the same with that of model without Wi-Fi, Unicom said in the statement. Meanwhile, users may get a free iPhone by subscribing to a monthly package of at least 226 yuan.
Offering an iPhone with Wi-Fi could help boost Unicom’s sales of the handset, analysts say. The iPhone offered by Unicom faced fierce competition from “gray market” versions that had the Wi-Fi function.
China Unicom had signed a contract with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:APPL, NYSE:APPL) in October 2009. The company, which aimed to sell two million iPhones within a year, has sold about 700,000 iPhones by the end of June, China Business News said, citing an unnamed source from China Unicom.
Users of mobile communication services in China reached 805.35 million in June 2010, according to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The number accounted for 60.5% of the country’s population.
