Apple’s Smart Bike Will Fuse Your Bike, iPhone, and iPod

A patent uncovered yesterday shows that Apple is developing a “Smart Bicycle System” that functions like Apple’s Nike + iPod system for runners.

Using the iPhone accelerometer (which measures acceleration) and gyroscope (which senses movement by recording tilt), the bike will be able to measure “speed, distance, time, altitude, elevation, incline, decline, heart rate, power, derailleur setting, cadence, [and] wind speed.” The system will also be equipped for audio and video, possibly an LCD or LED screen for viewing data, and Wi-Fi to communicate with other riders.
