Dish Network extending live TV to iPhone, Android

Satellite television services provider Dish Network will extended streaming media services to mobile platforms including the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry, enabling subscribers to view live TV on their smartphones and connected devices at no additional cost.

The Associated Press reports Dish will upgrade its iPhone/iPad application in September, allowing users to begin streaming live programming directly to their devices–the current version of the app offers subscribers tools to program their digital video recorders, browse schedule lineups and access remote control features. New BlackBerry and Android apps (the former slated to arrive in September, the latter in October) will already have the streaming feature enabled when they reach consumers.

According to the Associated Press, mobile users will need special hardware to leverage the new streaming TV service–options include placeshifting technology developer Sling Media’s SlingBox or upgrading to Dish’s own high-definition digital video recorder, which incorporates SlingBox functionality. Dish CEO Charles Ergen serves as chairman of satellite broadcast company EchoStar, which owns Sling Media.
