No one can deny the fact that Android devices are becoming popular across the globe with each passing day and all you non-believers please read this: According to NPD, 33% of smartphones sold in the US during the second quarter of 2010 were running Android, 28% were powered by RIM, and iPhone accounted for 22%. Another research firm, Canalys also claimed the same thing.
The logical question that comes to mind is, what could Apple do to avert this scenario. Most experts answer that iPhone on Verizon could be the answer to Android onslaught. So will Verizon iPhone prove to be the savour for Apple?
Coming back to current scenario, can we start assuming that Android devices would soon take the crown from RIM, the current market leader in smartphone sector in the US. Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that a total of 200,000 Android smartphones are activated across the world per day. “It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but an incredibly phenomenal success in its growth rate,” said Schmidt.
Some experts argued that although Android has managed to race ahead of iPhone in the second quarter there are a number of possibly mitigating factors here that could help the Apple’s device, regarded by many as the best smartphone in makrt, to regain the top slot. For instance: The NPD data took into account only 7 days of the iPhone 4 being available, so I think we need to wait the end of third quarter to make a fairer comparison.
Vlad Bobleanta of UnWired View noted that Android devices are set to do good business in future as well because they are making significant inroads into the midrange smartphone market. “[Android adoption in the midrange has been] helped by such devices as the HTC Wildfire, the Samsung Galaxy 3 and quite a few [smartphones] from Huawei and ZTE,” remarked Bobleanta.
It will be interesting to see what happens when ‘iPhone coming to Verizon’ announcement is actually made.
