There are risks when you jailbreak your iPhone. But you should remember that if you do not jailbreak the iPhone you may encounter many of the same issues that are generally blamed on jailbreaking. What are considered real risks and what are just scare tactics?
There was a risk that you could be sued for copyright violations prior to the recent exemption issued by the US Copyright Office. Since this ruling you do not have to worry about being sued for a copyright violation. Still that was never much of a worry as Apple has never filed suit against anyone for jailbreaking.
There is a real concern that when Apple updates the iOS of the iPhone that it will disable the jailbreak at best and disable the iPhone at worst. While there are no known instances of disabled iPhone from Apple updates it is a hassle. Every time Apple updates the iPhone it has the possibility of disabling the jailbreak. If this happens you will have to re-jailbreak your phone and may even have to re-install all third-party apps. If you have downloaded a lot of apps this could take a considerable amount of time. As a result many jailbreakers just do not update when Apple issues updates. This in not really the best solution as you will not have any of the new features and protections that Apple included in the updates.
Jailbreaking will void your Apple iPhone warranty. Apple continues to stand by this. There have been reports both ways of users being turned away from support and others are able to have their jailbroken iPhone supported under their warranty. That is a risk you will have to take. Restoring to factory defaults should prevent Apple from knowing that you have jailbroken the device but this is not always possible.
