Square Begins Shipping Mobile Card Readers Again

The iPhone introduced the whole to a device that utilizes little more than a touchscreen built for manipulation by way of the almighty finger. This in itself was quite the feat considering it was Apple’s first foray into the mobile phone industry. However, the real magic didn’t start until Apple released the iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 2.0 (now iOS) and most importantly the App Store.

Thanks to this mobile application store, Apple not only revolutionized the mobile software industry but gave their line up of iDevices features they never could have dreamed to be possible. We’ve seen amazing games, amazing productivity applications and just about everything else you could think of.

One company by the name of Square hoped to do things a bit differently by utilizing a mobile application to actually process credit cards. We told you about this service once before back in December of ’09 when it was known as SquareUp. Receiving quite a bit of buzz ever since and even receiving major endorsements from Digg.com founder Kevin Rose, Square went on to be quite the intuitive application spawning competition from VeriPhone’s PAYware. Not only could you input a credit card number utilizing a virtual keypad but Square sent out free credit card reading dongles to premiere users. This transformed the iPhone from just a phone into a mobile payment gateway good for any salesman on the go.

Unfortunately, the company ran into some problems dealing with payment limits, credit processing and other risk issues and had to temporarily close down their operations temporarily. Luckily, a happy customer has taken to the Square forums to give us a reassuring information straight from the company.

According to a forum post, the Square card readers are shipping once more effectively confirming that the payment system has stabilized and is back on track to accept credit card payments on the go.
