Cydia and Rock merge to form an even larger jailbreak app store

Jailbreaking an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad lets you access settings that would otherwise be unavailable, which is all well and good — but the reason most people jailbreak is to install apps that aren’t available in the official App Store.

Fortunately, there are a few third party app stores that make installing those apps almost as easy as installing software through Apple’s official channels.

Now it looks like two of the biggest app stores for jailbroken devices are teaming up. Cydia is acquiring Rock.

For now, users can continue to download apps from either store, but eventually the Rock app will close up shop and all the software available through Rock will be moved over to the Cydia store.

While competition is generally a good thing — and indeed, the only reason either of these stores exist is because Apple won’t approve some apps for sale in its store, this is probably a good move, as it will make it much easier for users to find the apps they’re looking for in a central place — and developers won’t have to market apps through the two separate stores.
