Apple said Wednesday that it is releasing a software update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices in November, which will bring new features such as wireless printing to its users.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company announced that the iOS 4.2 update will be available to users this November and will include “AirPrint,” a feature that automatically finds wireless-enabled printers on local networks and connections.
A beta version of the update was released to software developers on Wednesday.
AirPrint finds printers on home Wi-Fi networks, allowing users to send text, photos or graphics directly to the printer over a network connection. The service is designed to work only with certain Hewlett-Packard printers, and the company would not comment on future printer partners.
For non-HP printers, AirPrint can send files through computers connected physically or wirelessly to a printer.
“iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly,” said Philip Schiller, Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing. “AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS — no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download.”
Developers who’ve received the beta release already noted the many iPhone features being ported to the iPad platform.
The company’s iOS 4.2 software update in November, complete with new features and improved functionality, should make the product experience even more simple and seamless for dedicated Apple users everywhere.
