The blogosphere was all a-twitter Friday after Pocket-linter Stuart Miles was in an elevator in New York and noticed that the man standing next to him was doing some mobile tasks on an iPhone - a white iPhone.
After covertly taking some photos of the mystery man and his white iPhone, Miles struck up a conversation to find out how in the world the guy got hold of a white iPhone 4, which customers have been waiting for since June.
Mr. White iPhone wouldn’t give his name, but he did claim that that there’s a stockpile of the phones at Apple’s headquarters and the company won’t release them because different parts of the casing do not match in color; the whites aren’t equally white. Supposedly the guy knows someone at Apple, or works there himself, and was able to score one of the elusive phones.
“According to our jacket wearing gent, Apple is having trouble getting its two suppliers in the Far East to match the white used in the manufacturing of the parts,” Miles wrote in a Friday blog entry. “The white home button color doesn’t match the white front face plate color.”
Responses to Miles’ Pocket-lint report were mostly cordial, indicating that Apple customers don’t blame the company for taking its sweet time to get things just right.
A typical comment: “You just wouldn’t have thought that, in a million years, the reason they hadn’t got the white iP4 on sale is because of the color discrepancy.
You know what? I kinda like that about them - perfectionists!”

But not everyone was so understanding.
“If this is really the problem, I hope the white iPhone NEVER comes out,” another commenter wrote. “I pity the poor guys behind the Genius Bar who have to deal with some of the picky people who would expect warranty repair because the color of the button doesn’t match the color of the shell. Even if the problem is because of their own dirty fingers, Apple has some serious picky customers.”
Others went even further, pointing out that there was no proof the white iPhone was actually genuine, and that the mystery man might very well be a poser.
“Has the thought occurred to anyone this guy might have used a DIY kit to make his black iPhone 4 ‘white’ (there is a website for that) and because these reporter guys showed interest he probably just acts along and pretended having the original white iPhone 4?” another person wrote in response to Miles’ blog entry.
Another possibility not mentioned in responses to the blog entry: Perhaps this was a publicity stunt on the part of Apple. It does bear some resemblance to the “leaked iPhone 4” scandal back in April, which some still think was an intentional ploy on the part of Apple to generate excitement about the new phone prior to its launch in June.
