THE FRUIT THEMED peddler of expensive but fragile toys, Apple is pinning the blame for cracked Iphone 4 backs on the makers of slide-on cases.
Apparently it was either that or admit that the reason they are cracking is faulty design and the fact that the backs are made out of cheap glass.
Of course, that would mean having to admit that Apple’s design is faulty and its build quality is shonky, so it was never going to happen.
With a shortage of witches to blame, according to the Cult of Mac Apple is burning the makers of slide-on cases.
Apparently the problem is that if you have a slide-on case, you can get dirt inside between the case and the Iphone 4. The question remains as to why the Iphone 3G can handle the slip-on phone cases while its more advanced super-cool cousin can’t.
The Apple spin machine is now turning the story away from its faulty Iphone 4 to the makers of cases, many of whom are seeing their Christmas sales drop down the loo.
One supplier told the Cult of Mac that it is hardly their fault. If Jobs had not tried to stick a cheap glass back on the Iphone 4 there would not have been this problem.
The Iphone 4 back is not made from the same toughened Corning Gorilla Glass used on the front, so it seems that Apple hoped to save a bit of cash by using normal glass.
Tim Hickman, an Ipod and Iphone accessory veteran and CEO of Hard Candy Cases said there is no issue with trapped dirt. He said his firm had shipped 22,000 units and not heard a single complaint.
While he would say that, “glassgate” really is making the Iphone 4 Steve Jobs’ version of Microsoft’s Windows Vista. Not only does the phone drop calls when you do something strange like hold it to your ear, it can only be used by right-handers.
Most of the design faults will be fixed when the Iphone 5 comes into the shops, so we guess Jobs is just trying to avoid a recall of the product until then.
Blaming case makers must seem like an easy way out.
