Several American media announced that Apple plans to introduce by 2011 in its new iPhone 5 the technology called Soft-SIM.This means that the factory will incorporate the major components that make the SIM card, a chip that would provide the phone number and the operator.
This new soft-SIM can be activated remotely by Internet or SMS. Even users could activate it from iTunes. All this will gave a significant impact on reducing the role of telephone operators to minimum.
Depending on the type of agreement that Apple manages to establish with various companies, the customer could even buy the mobile service directly from Apple.
Major European telecommunications operators pose a serious conflict against Apple’s plans. This new technology that emulates the SIM card destroys the main link between the customer and the operator.Rumors say that many companies promised to stop subsidizing the iPhone from Apple which would mean that these phones will have a higher price compared to those who are still subsidized.Operatores fear that Apple wants to take control of the direct relationship between operator and customer.
An analysis made by Bernstein reports that the consequences of this proposal would hit with a reduction of about 4 billion per year that are lost operating profit and cuts between a billion and 2 billion of potential growth in sales . He also emphasizes that the sale of the iPhone could fall worldwide between 9% and 12% if the operators remove the subsidies.
