Free iOS 4.2.1 now becomes rallying cry for impatient iUsers

On the heels of iOS 4.2.1, Apple has to be asking itself what it did to deserve this, and how it got itself into this situation. All the company ever did was offer iPad and iPhone users a free update of its touchscreen operating system which promised to pack next-gen features into the current generation of iOS.

And all it ever said was that said update would surface in November, which last we checked still has nine days of life left in it. And yet “free iOS 4.2.1 now” has become the rallying cry from frustrated users who are fed up with the late arrival of a product which isn’t actually late. Here’s where Apple went wrong, and why user expectations for iOS 4.2.1 have gone askew:

It was announced too early: for reasons that he’s probably now regretting, Steve Jobs opted to show off the brightest features of iOS 4.2 back when the iPhone was still running 4.0. As a result, users feel like they’ve been waiting for 4.2 forever because they’ve known about it for so long. In hindsight, 4.2 should probably not have been unveiled until after 4.1 had been released.

So close, so far away: anyone who’s been following closely knows that iOS 4.2 was almost out the door before being yanked at the last minute due to a bug, and has since become iOS 4.2.1 which now has to undergo all the same testing and pre-release procedures. Impatient iUsers are now starting to feel like it’s deja vu all over again.

iPad users have too much riding on it: iOS 4.2 may not be a big deal for iPhone users (unless wireless printing and streaming is their cup of tea), but iPad users have been waiting all year to join the iOS 4 revolution. If Apple had managed to deliver iOS 4.0 to iPad users back when it was delivered to iPhone and iPod touch users, there wouldn’t be so much riding on 4.2 or so much open consternation.
