iPhone Sees Decrease, Developers Anxious For Windows Phone 7

Millennial Media today released a new report entitled “State of the Apps Industry Snapshot,” in which the company details developer interest in a variety of mobile platforms, among other data points related to the mobile app ecosystem.

Millennial collaborated with DIGIDAY and Stifel Nicolaus to survey developers, publishers and advertisers on their current mobile app practices in 2010 and intended plans for 2011.  A similar survey was conducted in Q3 2009, giving directional year-over-year comparisons from 2009-2010.

In terms of which platforms developers were interested in the most during 2010; iPhone, Android, iPad, RIM and Windows Mobile were the top five.  Android, iPad, Windows Mobile and Symbian saw the most year-over-year growth from 2009 to 2010 however.  Interestingly, iPhone — together with RIM — were the only two platforms that saw decreases from 2009 to 2010.

Looking ahead to 2011, the survey shows Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 platform is tied with iPad as the platform that will be added to most publishers’ and developers’ plates in the coming year.  Android takes the top spot in 2011, positioning itself to challenge iPhone in terms of developer and publisher interest.  There’s more in the actual report, which can be downloaded here.
