Apple revving yet another new version of iOS in 2010? Must be because the Verizon iPhone 4 is coming. White iPhone 4 delayed? Must be secretly tied to the Verizon iPhone 4. Steve Jobs grew a beard? The Verizon iPhone 4 is definitely coming soon.

The knowledge that a Verizon iPhone is coming at some point, combined with the near total lack of knowledge on the subject beyond that one fact, has led to some awfully strange methods of connecting the dots.
It’s as if everything Apple does must somehow be a sign of what the company’s plans are for how to unite the iPhone and Verizon, as if there were nothing else going on at Apple headquarters than strategy sessions centered around how to send yet more coded hints about it through everything else the company says or does.
As Dr. Freud once famously said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. While Apple’s secrecy means that sometimes the only way to gain any insight into what’s coming next is to read the tea leaves, that alone doesn’t mean that everything Apple does is interpretable to mean something else.
Lately it’s been the actions of those who stand to lose the most with a Verizon iPhone whose actions have been telegraphing what’s coming next, as AT&T is running ads for every iPhone competitor under the sun and Motorola is assuring shareholders it’ll be okay in the Verizon iPhone 4 era.
But as far as Apple’s actions, other than trying to figure out what “the future is long” actually means, there’s not a lot to interpret regarding the specifics of the Verizon iPhone. After all, sometimes a cigar is in fact just a Verizon-compatible cigar.
