Thank goodness for tech geeks — they go where the rest of us fear to tread, and often find really cool stuff for us to ponder.
There have been some inklings found in iOS 4.2 betas suggesting that MobileMe might get tied into Apple IDs and login procedures. It was interesting, but not very conclusive what all that meant. Now there’s new evidence in more recent iOS 4.2 builds (like iOS 4.2.1 Gold Master) that Apple could be giving away MobileMe to some users.
There were several device-specific error messages found (via AppleAccounts.Framework) that refer to free MobileMe accounts. The messages include reaching “the maximum number of free accounts” for a specific device and certain ones not being “qualified for free MobileMe service.”
These error messages aren’t in the current version of iOS, so that’s pretty interesting. But no one knows what, if any, of the MobileMe services might be offered and to whom — it’s kind of doubtful Apple will give full service away to everyone. Another error message was found that free accounts may not be used for MobileMe Mail, but could be used for other MobileMe services. (Perhaps Find My iPhone, iDisk, Contact/Calendar/Safari/Notes over-the-air sync, or Photo Galleries?)
Other rumor mongers think — since over-the-air syncing is much-desired — this might be a signal that Apple could start offering free MobileMe syncing services.
OTA syncing would be awesome. That or Find My iPhone get my votes for services I’d love to see become freebies. What about you? Any long-desired MobileMe services you’ve always coveted?
