Battlefield: Verizon iPhone 4 vs Sprint pricing vs T-Mobile service

The fight for the hearts and minds of iPhone users between the two big guns won’t be the only battlefield in the Verizon iPhone 4 era. Even as Verizon and AT&T prepare to go head to head, another three-way fight is brewing on the horizon. Of those Sprint and T-Mobile customers who wanted an iPhone but weren’t willing to go to AT&T to make that happen, how many of them will now settle for moving to Verizon to do the same?

Much of that will come down to interpretation of Apple’s actions, as the launch of a Verizon iPhone 4 will be seen by many hopeful T-Mobile and Sprint lovers as a sign that the floodgates are open and the iPhone is coming to all four U.S. carriers before too much longer. But if it’s true that Verizon is indeed paying Apple extra to keep Sprint and T-Mobile at bay, customers of those two carriers will have a decision to make. Accurate or not, Verizon and AT&T are largely viewed as two sides of the same coin, a pair of goliath carriers who don’t try all that hard and are only suitable if they happen to offer a strong signal in your area. Accordingly, each of the two has a fanbase that’s steadfast if not enthusiastic. However, underdogs Sprint and T-Mobile are a different story in the perception department.

Sprint customers love their pricing plans, as the company’s ads love to proclaim. T-Mobile customers love their customer service, as they never hesitate to mention in conversation. And of course both customer bases love their 4G, at least in those cities where 4G actually exists. If the AT&T iPhone 4 wasn’t enough to lure those customers away, is there reason to expect the Verizon iPhone 4 to do the same? Then again, for whatever reason, AT&T has engendered a special kind of hate among a sizable portion of the population. So assuming a Sprint iPhone and a T-Mobile iPhone aren’t on the horizon, the question for Sprint and T-Mobile customers who want the iPhone 4 becomes whether Verizon represents easier medicine to swallow than the kind of potion that has been available thus far in the iPhone’s existence.
