Dish enables live streaming in Remote Access iPhone/iPad app

Dish Network has offered a free iPhone app called Remote Access that allowed you to program your Dish receiver to record shows remotely. However, owners of Dish’s new SlingLoaded DVR, the ViP 922, as well as the new Sling adapter for the ViP 722 or 722k, were waiting for the app to let you stream live programming to your iPhone or iPad. Well, that day is here.

We tried the updated app out and it worked as advertised and we liked the interface on the iPad. The video quality wasn’t great and the sound had some hiccups now and then, but that’s partially the fault of the lackluster DSL connection where our test ViP 922 Slingloaded DVR is situated. In other words, video quality will vary according to your bandwidth (on both sides of the connection). For those who want to use their iPad as a “mobile” TV in their homes, the streaming quality should be quite decent over your home WiFi network.

It’s worth noting that this app is free while both the SlingPlayer Mobile iPhone and iPad apps cost $30 (those apps are for Slingbox owners who aren’t DISH subscribers). Obviously, EchoStar, which owns Sling Media and spawned Dish, is showing a little favoritism toward Dish subscribers when it comes to place-shifting your video.
