One’s attention would inevitably be captured by Word Lens the first time one see’s this apps in operation. This iPhone-based optical character recognition (OCR) app that is handy for language translation has been created by Quest Visual. Your camera can be used to translate a foreign language almost instantaneously with this app.
Letters in an image captured on the camera are distinguished in the Word Lens using OCR. It recognizes letters to form the words which are then searched for in the built-in dictionary. Hence, translation from one language to another is simplified once the words have been recognized.

The function of Word Lens is akin to Google Goggles which permits the translation of words contained in an image. However, the processing and translation on the phone being done in real-time in Word Lens gives it an edge over its competitor. An Internet connection is essential and translation requires Google’s servers, which slows down the translation process in Google Goggles.
The App Store has made Word Lens available to be tried. Language pairs (English/Spanish) as an in-app can be bought and the core app can be obtained free. Although solely English to Spanish and Spanish to English translations are supported by the app at launch, future versions will have other languages. Two demo modes are included in the app which makes it worth a download even if you do not want to but a language pack. Letters in an image are reversed by the reverse mode and the words will white-out with the erase mode.
iOs4.0 or later and a video camera are required in Word lens and is compatible with iPhone 3Ga, iPhone 4 and the 4th generation iPod touch.
