Riven comes to iPhone, first iOS game to be over a 1GB

Riven: The Sequel to Myst launched for iDevices yesterday, and while that’s interesting enough on its own (for those who like that sort of thing), the thing really worth nothing is just how big the bloody thing is. Riven has become the first game launched for iOS that goes over a Gig.

You don’t want to download this direct to your iPhone, according to developer Cyan Worlds, who says such a download is “theoretically possible via a wireless connection, but… uh… well… you really don’t want to.”

Riven employs plenty of full motion video and high quality audio in order to boost its file size to just over 1GB, with a temporary 2GB needed for the install process. It also boasts full Game Center support, a zoom function, a bookmark for progress tracking and some “hot spot hints” that aren’t in the PC version.

iOS games are getting more and more opulent in terms of size, visuals and ambition as we move ever farther from the “mobile games are only good for casual crap” nonsense. Let’s have some more ambitious games and maybe that idiot I’m arguing with on Youtube will stop calling mobile games a fad.
