According to sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Verizon Wireless is prepping to offer the Apple iPhone during the first quarter of 2011 and Apple is set to begin mass producing the phone by the end of this year.
The Wall Street Journal cites “people familiar to the matter,” and says that the iPhone will resemble the current iPhone 4 on AT&T but will be “based on an alternative wireless technology used by Verizon.” It’s not clear if that means the iPhone will take advantage of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network, which it plans to deploy in 38 markets by the end of 2010. The WSJ says that Pegatron has been working on the device.
“Verizon Wireless has been meeting with Apple, adding capacity and testing its networks to prepare for the heavy data load by iPhone users, according to one person familiar with the matter,” the Journal said, adding that Verizon is hoping to thwart the network overloads that AT&T experienced after it launched the iPhone in some markets.
Unsurprisingly, Apple is also reportedly working on a new fifth generation iPhone that has a new form factor. We expect that new device will be announced in June, as is typical with Apple’s iPhone announcement schedule.
