Apple, Samsung Wins Holiday Sales Race

Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S devices are expected to emerge as the winners from the holiday sales race, as mobile companies gear up to release their fourth-quarter results in a recovering smartphone market.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based device maker and the South Korean electronics giant are expected to report the strongest revenue results from the holiday season last year, according to a poll of 32 financial banks, brokerages and research firms. Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S phones are anticipated to have gained share where other top companies, including LG, Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson, are expected to lose some ground.

The numbers are also expected by analysts to confirm two trends which emerged in 2010: a bigger gap between winners and losers and an overall recovery in the phone market after the slump of 2009. On average, global handset sales volumes are expected to have grown 10.8 percent in the September-December period of 2010.

The rise of the smartphone market fueled the robust revenues of Taiwan-based HTC, which published its results on January 6. The company said December sales more than doubled, thanks to its smartphones running on Google’s Android software. The success of its Android phones helped its shares rise by 160 percent in the last year.

While smartphones are a small part of the overall number of mobile phones in the market, they are important to handset makers because customers using them spend more, for both the phone itself and for data and usage.

Apple is due to report its fourth-quarter results on January 18, while Samsung will close the reporting season for the sector on January 28. Sony Ericsson will report on January 20, LG Electronics and Motorola report on January 26, with the largest phone maker Nokia due on January 27.
