Well, iPhone 5 is expected to be sported with a Qualcomm sourced baseband chip, which is much similar to the one that will be introduced in the Verizon Wireless iPhone 4 for supporting CDMA accessibility. This means that there are some talks going on the change in plans for the processor from Infineon to Qualcomm, probably because of the increasing chances of iPhone 5 to be launched with Verizon Wireless.

This chip from Qualcomm is an exclusive one designed for iPhones and is a hybrid one supporting the CDMA network in addition to 3G and others, and thus has the probability of being concurrently released over the CDMA network of Verizon Wireless and GSM network of AT&T.
How this works is that the baseband in the chip is the one that manages the functioning of the antenna on the device which will decide on the network based on availability and allow the cellular data processing and voice calling as long as you are not locked into the contract.
