IRS Releases Taxes App for Android & iPhone

Have you done your taxes yet? If not, you can now download an application from the Internal Revenue Service (ITS) for your Android and iPhone that will let you check your refunds and get information.

The application was launched Monday and is called IRS2Go. It can be downloaded for free at the Apple Application store or at the Android Marketplace. The new application for smart phones is part of the IRS’s commitment to modernize their agency and give taxpayers the ability to get things done in the way they are used to doing things, said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a release to the media. He added that as technology keeps getting better and taxpayers continue to get their data in new and innovative methods, the IRS will keep making it easier for them to access useful info.

This isn’t the first time the IRS is joining in the social media revolution. They put out a YouTube page in 2009 and started using Twitter in 2010, along with putting out a podcast with tax tips. This new program, which is one of a mere few apps the federal government has released, promises taxpayers a safe and secure way to get the help they need to do their taxes.

The IRS2GO will let taxpayers check the status of their tax filing by putting in their Social Security number, which will be heavily encrypted so that it remains a safe option, plus put in their filing status, and the amount of the refund they are supposed to be getting on their tax return. Another aspect of the program lets taxpayers put in their email address so they can start getting daily tax tips in their email.

If you used e-file, you will be able to find out the status of your tax return using IRS2Go within 72 hours after getting a confirmation email.
