Ubiquisys on Wednesday put out a unique femtocell targeted chiefly at travelers and primarily iPhone users. The attocell draws on the Internet connection from a computer over USB and broadcasts a 3G connection just powerful enough for phone calls and data while staying in a country’s local wireless limits.
Some countries allow power for a whole room, but the attocell can still broadcast a signal 5mm out in tightly regulated areas, or enough to use a phone with a headset or the speakerphone.
The box is shaped around the iPhone and is just large enough to serve as a stand for Apple’s device, though any phone that can support common HSPA and UMTS bands for 3G should work. Android, BlackBerry and Symbian hardware has already been tested.
Attocells should be sold through carriers, and talks are underway with “several mobile operators,” Ubiquisys said. It didn’t name them or say when it expected the hardware to ship. The teamwork with providers could lead to discounted prices or possibly giveaways, especially on carriers where the regular 3G network can be congested.
