A Verizon iPhone release could happen in two weeks, to give Apple most of the retail attention until Verizon’s 4G LTE smartphone splash in March.

AppleInsider reports that Apple is quietly prohibiting vacation days for some retail employees for three weeks, to begin the last week of January and continue into the first half of February. If a Verizon iPhone 4 will ever be released, this timeframe is kind of the best option for Apple to make a move.
Releasing it at any later point wouldn’t only make it too close to the iPhone 5 release, but also crash with Verizon Wireless’ upcoming 4G LTE smartphone splash to begin in March. By releasing the Verizon iPhone in late January or early February, Apple would get around 30 days of full retail attention in Verizon stores.
Interestingly, the original Droid got most of the retail attention during the Palm Pre Plus launch last year, and now it seems like the Verizon iPhone will get the same treatment during the Palm Pre 2 launch. A recent report on Verizon Wireless sales numbers indicated that both the Palm Pre 2 and rumored HTC Lexikon may perform decently after all though, as the Verizon iPhone as well as the upcoming 4G LTE smartphones don’t have hardware QWERTY thumbboards.
It’s worth noting that AT&T this week announced that it would start selling the iPhone 3GS for $50 with a new two-year contract. Once Verizon Wireless starts offering the iPhone, it’ll be interesting to see whether these carriers will eventually find themselves in an iPhone price war. The iPhone’s mainstream appeal is as strong as ever, and will most likely soon be a key choice for the many who aren’t ready to sign up for 4G data plans.
