Verizon iPhone to go on sale late January, use current plans

The Verizon iPhone should go on sale sooner than expected and with relatively little change to plans, two late leaks gave away on Saturday. Once thought to be ready February 3, the CDMA iPhone 4 is now said by the WSJ to be ready for late January. A Reuters tip also noted the voice and data plans would be unchanged from what Verizon offers today.

As such, the plans should be more expensive to use but also more flexible. Verizon charges a minimum $40 for 450 minutes of voice with unlimited evenings and weekends, $15 for 150MB of data and $30 for unlimited data. AT&T is tied in voice, offers more base data (250MB) and has a cheaper maximum data plan, but it caps its best data plan at 2GB per month and has a fixed number of evening and weekend minutes on its 450-minute plan.

The timing of the launch, both for the unveiling and the ship date, could well blunt from Android manufacturers to launch 4G-capable phones like the HTC Thunderbolt. Most of these aren’t expected to ship until sometime later in the year and have already had much of their initial press dampened by Verizon’s decision to hold its iPhone event just two days after CES ends.
