According to The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, Apple are working on a less expensive iPhone. The “iPhone Mini” is likely to be about half the size and price of existing models, and will be released some time during the coming summer.
Unlike many Apple related rumours, this one does seem to have at least a foothold in reality. According to The Wall Street Journal, people have already seen prototypes of this device, which goes by the codename N97. One person who saw the prototype said the device was significantly lighter than the iPhone 4 and featured a touchscreen edge-to-edge display.
Apart from the size and price point of the Apple iPhone Mini, it remains to be seen if anything else will be different. If Apple manage to produce a phone that is not too underpowered in relation to its big brother, it may appeal to an entirely new market of smartphone consumers.
With more and more people buying Android phones all the time, Apple are losing ground in some markets, especially as many Android phones can be given away for free on two year contracts. If the iPhone Mini comes it at around half the price of its big brother, some carriers may even be able to offer the same deals with this device.
Along with news on the iPhone Mini, The Wall Street Journal have also reported a revamp of MobileMe, a cloud based ecosystem that Apple have been developing for over a year. If Apple can make this service work it is likely that new iDevices will need less on-board memory, and instead use the cloud to save and share content.
While Apple don’t have anything as revolutionary as the iPad to offer in 2011, the continual evolution of the iPhone and iPad range is likely to keep them in the tech headlines all around the world.
