It looks like T-Mobile customers hoping to quickly purchase an Apple iPhone because of the company’s acquisition by AT&T will have to wait a little longer. Like a year.
Following the announcement on Sunday that AT&T plans to buy T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom to create the largest wireless provider in the U.S., a list of frequently asked questions was posted on the official T-Mobile website. One question is specifically devoted to the iPhone, which is currently only available to AT&T and Verizon customers.
“T-Mobile USA remains an independent company,” the FAQ reads. “The acquisition is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months. We do not offer the iPhone. We offer cutting edge devices like the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and coming soon our new Sidekick 4G.”
Appleinsider.com reports the merging of customer bases from AT&T and T-Mobile would create a total of about 130 million users, making AT&T the largest carrier in the U.S. AT&T has said that acquiring T-Mobile will help to speed up its own existing nationwide network.
According to iphone Greece, Deutsche Telekom specifically cited T-Mobile’s lack of the iPhone as a reason why the company’s US subsidiary’s performance was slumping last fall.
Deutsche Telekom was an early iPhone partner for Apple in Europe, but it could not bring the popular smartphone to America for T-Mobile due to radio frequency differences in the firm’s US network. T-Mobile’s non-standard 3G radio spectrum allocations were granted due to the scarcity of available spectrum.
According to ipod.about.com, it seems more likely that if there is going to be a T-Mobile iPhone, it will be the iPhone 6 (likely to debut in the summer of 2012).
T-Mobile is indicating that it won’t offer the iPhone until the AT&T deal is complete, most likely in early-to-mid 2012.
