Apple pulls Christian ‘ex gay’ iPhone app. What do you think?

Apple removed a controversial application Tuesday night from its iPhone platform.

Exodus International, a global Christian ministry out of Orlando, created an application for “helping those struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction to live a life congruent with biblical teaching.”

March 22, 2011, Apple pulled the application. Exodus International says Apple’s web developer told the ministry the app was “offensive to large groups of people.”

The websites truthwinsout.org and change.org encouraged users to sign a petition to get the application removed. More than 150,000 signatures were submitted. The founder and executive director of Truth Wins Out, Wayne Besen, tells NBC25, “Fortunately, they (Apple) listened to their customers and they did the right thing.”

Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International tells NBC25, “This is really about dialogue and diversity and this is being ended because of the trend that we’re seeing in our culture, a dangerous trend, to really silence people who are coming from a biblical worldview on the issues of sexuality.”

Besen says Exodus’ application was hateful and bigoted. “It also targeted youth with really dangerous messages that they were sick and sinful and can and should change their sexuality.”

Chambers says Exodus would never petition Apple to remove an application on homosexuality. “Whether it’s genetic or whether it’s not, people are free to make their own decisions, and we uphold that and celebrate that.”

Besen says the issue is not about free speech and open dialogue. “It seems that Exodus does not believe in the first amendment and doesn’t believe that Apple is a private company that gets to pick who’s on the platform.”

Exodus International is encouraging people to contact Apple if they disagree with the decision.

NBC25 has contacted apple and is awaiting a response.
