Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) deals are normally ideal if you don’t fancy being tied down to a lengthy phone contract. However, for iPhone 4 users your choices are normally dependent on the two main mobile operators, Verizon or AT&T. But Engadget has uncovered news that the relatively unknown Cricket Wireless dealers are able to flash any iPhone 4 you give them, so it will work on their own network.
Even the new Verizon iPhone 4 is flashable, but there are a few prerequisites required before it is possible. The first is you have to jailbreak the iPhone 4 (which may put off some users) and secondly you need to install some third party MMS software. If you have done both of those you then need to place your trust in the chaps at Cricket Wireless and hope they do not brick your phone by doing the procedure. However, as the video below clearly shows, the whole process is possible.
Of course most people I’ll bet have never heard of Cricket Wireless (I know I hadn’t), so I checked out their website to see what PAYG deals that they had to offer, and to be honest they seem pretty reasonable.
They do 3 tariffs on PAYG, costing from $1 to $3. If we take the $3 tariff as an example, you only pay the charge when you use the phone, if it remains idle you won’t get charged. For the money, you get unlimited talk and US long distance calls. International calls are charged at 25 cents a minute. Unlimited texts and web usage is also available and coverage is supposed to be nationwide.
It’s here that there may be a problem because I typed in several zip codes into the availability window and coverage was extremely sparse, so it’s best to check their website before even attempting to jailbreak your phone and go through this procedure.
