Skype and Qik announce Qik Video Connect, allows iPhone to Android video calls

Skype introduced Qik Video Connect for iPhone today and it allows the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4th generation do video calls with Android devices. Qik users on Android and iOS can now make video calls with each other over Wi-Fi or 3G with the new app.

Perhaps the only downside to this based on our experiences is the quality over 3G, but sometimes it’s better to have the feature than not at all, right?

You’ll also now be able to view your friends’ videos in a feed and you can still broadcast live video and post the link to Facebook or Twitter so your friends can watch.

CNET reports:

The app offers two-way video calls, and lets you record video mail. Qik’s live broadcasting skill is present in the feature that lets you post a live link to Facebook and Twitter if you’d like, so friends can watch in real time.

The app comes in two versions: a paid version for $2.99 that gives you HD video quality, video editing capabilities and real-time filters and effects. There is also a free version that should become available, but is currently awaiting Apple’s approval for the app store.

It’s good to see a lot of cool new things happening since Skype’s acquisition of Qik, and hopefully there will be more to come in the near future.
