It’s being called the “gay cure” app: A smart phone application claiming to change homosexuality. The iPhone app is sparking outrage by gay activists who say the application is “hateful and bigoted.”

More than 145,000 people have signed a petition calling for Apple to remove the so-called “gay cure” app from the iTunes store.
“We believe that being gay is something that is perfectly fine that doesn’t need any fixing,” says Drew Wilson, communications manager at The Center, GLBT community of Colorado.
Wilson says the Exodus application never should have been approved by Apple.
“Apple has a pre-approving stance that they do not approve [applications] they find objectionable or inappropriate in any way. For them to approve an app from Exodus International, an ex-gay ministry which we feel could be harmful to the GLBT community.”
Exodus International claims to “provide support for individuals who want to recover from homosexuality,” launched the Exodus app on February 15th.
“There is a lot of misinformation and propaganda floating around about the Intent and the purpose of the app,” says Jeff Buchanan of Exodus International.
The app is being dubbed by some as the “gay cure” but the company who created it says they are simply misunderstood.
“I want to provide the information and education for people who are looking for an alternative to unwanted same sex attractions,” Buchanan says.
The app is free and provides video and other content that reflects the group’s mission.
Gay rights group, Change.org started a petition online to get the application removed from the iTunes App Store.
They claim the app is “hateful and bigoted.”
Exodus says the iPhone application can help as an alternative to homosexuality not a “cure.”
“Our mission is to reach those with unwanted same-sex attractions and help them to reconcile their sexuality with their faith,” Buchanan adds.
FOX31 News logged on to the app store to check on the application and it was no longer available. The app was available through Tuesday evening and was recently pulled. Apple did not return our calls for comment.
